Catholic devotion to Saint Joan of Arc honors her as a young woman whose courage was inseparable from faith. Born in France during the turmoil of the Hundred Years’ War, Joan testified that she received heavenly guidance and responded with remarkable obedience. Her life has long been remembered as a witness to purity, fortitude, and trust in God’s providence. After her execution in 1431, a later Church process overturned the judgment against her, and she was canonized in 1920. Her feast is observed on May 30, the date of her death. In devotional art, Joan is often shown in armor with a banner, a sign of her courageous mission placed under the name of Christ.

The Saint’s Story
Saint Joan of Arc was born in Domrémy, France, in 1412. As a young girl, she grew up in a simple village home, learning the Catholic faith amid war and uncertainty. According to her testimony, she heard heavenly voices calling her to help France and remain faithful to God. Though young and without military training, Joan went forward with extraordinary courage, helping to lift the siege of Orléans and leading the French king to Reims for his coronation. She was later captured, unjustly tried, and put to death in 1431. The Church eventually vindicated her memory, and she is now loved as a saint of brave obedience and steadfast faith.
