History & Devotion

Saint Benedict of Nursia is honored as the father of Western monasticism. In the sixth century, he formed communities of monks and gave them a Rule marked by prayer, humility, obedience, stability, and work offered to God. The Benedictine way has shaped Catholic spiritual life for centuries, especially through the rhythm of the Divine Office, lectio divina, and a life ordered toward seeking God. Benedict’s life was not free from trials, yet he met opposition with faith and steadiness of heart. The tradition of the raven and the poisoned bread speaks of God’s care for him amid danger.
