History & Devotion

Saint Francis of Assisi has long been loved in Catholic devotion for his radical poverty, humility, and joyful praise of God through creation. Born in Assisi in the late twelfth century, he became the founder of the Friars Minor and called his brothers to live the Gospel with simplicity and peace. His reverence for animals and the natural world is rooted not in sentiment alone, but in his deep belief that all creation gives glory to God. Because of this witness, he is honored as a patron saint of animals and ecology. His feast day is celebrated on October 4, often with prayers of gratitude for creation and blessings of animals.

The Saint’s Story

Francis was born into comfort in Assisi, but his life changed through conversion, prayer, and service to the poor. He heard Christ calling him to rebuild the Church and gradually surrendered wealth, ambition, and status to follow Jesus in poverty. Francis preached peace, cared for the sick, and formed a brotherhood devoted to the Gospel. Tradition remembers his tenderness toward animals and his praise of Brother Sun, Sister Moon, and all creatures as gifts from God. Near the end of his life, he bore the stigmata, sharing in a profound way in the wounds of Christ. His life still teaches the Church to love simply, serve humbly, and praise God with joy.
