Devotional Reflection

About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Francis of Assisi is pictured here with childlike tenderness, barefoot in a simple rope-tied tunic, holding a small bird as animals gather calmly around him. A deer, fox, rabbits, hedgehog, mouse, squirrel, butterflies, and songbirds fill the flowering landscape, while a stone chapel rises beside the stream in the distance. The scene reflects the Franciscan spirit of humility, peace, and wonder before God’s creation. Its soft storybook character invites young hearts and families to contemplate holiness not as something distant, but as a life of gentleness, gratitude, and love for every creature entrusted to God’s care.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi has long been marked by reverence for poverty, peace, humility, and praise of God as Creator. Francis saw the created world not as something separate from prayer, but as a sign of the goodness and generosity of the Lord. Medieval Franciscan tradition remembers his gentleness toward animals, including the beloved account of his preaching to the birds. Because of this enduring association, he is widely honored as a patron of animals and ecology. His feast on October 4 is often observed with prayers of thanksgiving for creation and, in many places, blessings of animals.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Francis of Assisi was born in Assisi in the late twelfth century and grew up amid comfort and ambition before a deep conversion turned his heart toward Christ. Renouncing wealth, he embraced poverty, simplicity, and service, seeking to follow Jesus with radical trust. He repaired churches, cared for the poor and the sick, and gathered companions who became the Friars Minor. Francis’s joyful humility, love for the Crucified Lord, and reverence for all creation made him one of the Church’s most beloved saints. His life still teaches that holiness can be lived through peace, gratitude, mercy, and complete dependence on God.
