The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated by the Catholic Church on September 14. It honors the Cross of Christ as the sacred instrument through which the Lord accomplished our redemption. Historically, the feast is connected with ancient Christian devotion in Jerusalem and the dedication of the churches built over the sites of Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection in the fourth century. In Catholic worship and prayer, the Cross is never honored apart from Christ, but because it reveals the depth of His self-giving love. What once signified suffering and shame has become, through the Resurrection, the sign of victory, mercy, and hope.

Lord Jesus Christ, by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Teach me to look upon the Cross with faith, gratitude, and courage. In times of suffering, unite my heart to Your saving love, and lead me from fear into hope, from sin into mercy, and from death into life with You. Amen.
