Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, often called the Lily of the Mohawks, holds a beloved place in Catholic devotion as the first Native American saint canonized by the Church. Born in the 17th century among the Mohawk people, she became known for purity of heart, perseverance in suffering, and deep love for Jesus Christ. Her devotion is often associated with lilies, a symbol of purity, and with the natural world, where many Catholics find a fitting reminder of her quiet holiness. She is honored as a patroness of Indigenous peoples, ecology, the environment, and care for creation. Her memorial is observed on July 14 in the United States.

The Saint’s Story

Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in what is now New York. After losing her family to smallpox as a child, she carried both physical scars and a life marked by hardship. Drawn to the Catholic faith, she was baptized and took the name Kateri, after Saint Catherine of Siena. Her love for Christ led her to a life of prayer, chastity, and charity, even when her faith brought misunderstanding and difficulty. She later lived near the mission at Kahnawake, where her holiness became quietly evident to those around her. Saint Kateri died in 1680 at only twenty-four years old, leaving a witness of gentle courage and unwavering devotion.
