Our Lady of Grace in Art Nouveau

About This Sacred Artwork

Our Lady of Grace appears in serene radiance, clothed in ivory and deep blue, her lowered gaze filled with quiet tenderness. From her open hands, streams of light descend across the scene, recalling Mary’s maternal intercession and the graces God gives through her care. Beneath her feet, the globe and serpent evoke the promise of victory over evil, while the surrounding lilies, roses, vines, and golden ornament form a luminous Art Nouveau shrine around her. Inspired by the devotional imagery of the Miraculous Medal, the composition invites the heart into trust, humility, and peaceful confidence beneath Our Lady’s mantle.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

The title Our Lady of Grace is closely connected with Catholic devotion to Mary as a motherly intercessor, through whom the faithful ask for God’s help with confidence. This image draws especially from the Miraculous Medal tradition, which arose after the 1830 apparitions associated with Saint Catherine Labouré in Paris. The familiar form of Mary standing upon the globe, crushing the serpent, and extending rays from her hands became a beloved sign of her Immaculate Conception, her closeness to the Church, and her prayerful care for souls. Over time, the medal’s imagery entered Catholic homes, chapels, and prayer lives as a quiet reminder to turn to Mary and, through her, more faithfully to Christ.

For Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of Grace

Our Lady of Grace, gentle Mother of the Savior, receive my prayers and lead me closer to your Son. Teach me humility, purity of heart, and trust in God’s providence. Stretch your maternal hands over all who suffer, and obtain for us the graces we need to follow Christ faithfully. Amen.
